Ingredients

For the Brownie Layer:

  • 100 g dark chocolate, chopped
  • 100 g unsalted butter
  • 100 g granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 50 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

For the Butter Cake Layer:

  • 100 g unsalted butter (softened)
  • 100 g caster sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 100 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Prepare the Brownie Layer:

  1. Melt chocolate and butter together over a double boiler or in short microwave bursts.
  2. Let cool slightly, then stir in sugar.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time.
  4. Fold in flour, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract.
  5. Pour batter into a greased and lined loaf pan.

Steam the Brownie Layer:

  1. Steam over medium heat for 15–20 minutes or until the top is set but not fully cooked through.
  2. Remove from heat, keep in the steamer.

Prepare the Butter Cake Layer:

  1. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add eggs one at a time, beating well.
  3. Fold in sifted flour and baking powder.
  4. Add milk and vanilla extract and mix until smooth.
  5. Carefully pour the butter cake batter over the semi-cooked brownie layer.

Final Steaming:

  1. Cover the pan with foil to avoid water droplets.
  2. Steam for another 25–30 minutes or until a skewer inserted comes out clean.

Tips:

  • Keep the steam steady but not too vigorous.
  • Use a towel under the steamer lid to prevent water from dripping onto the cake.
  • Let the cake cool completely before slicing for clean layers.
