Italian Cannoncini Recipe

Cannoncini are delightful Italian pastries made from puff pastry and typically filled with a sweet cream. Here’s a simple recipe for you to try:

Ingredients:

For the pastry:

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Sugar (for sprinkling)

For the filling:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: 1/4 cup mascarpone cheese for a richer filling

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Prepare the Puff Pastry:
Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Cut it into long triangles (about 4 inches wide at the base).
  3. Shape the Cannoncini:
Starting from the base of each triangle, roll the pastry tightly towards the tip. Make sure the tip is tucked under the base to prevent it from unraveling during baking.
  4. Egg Wash:
Place the rolled pastries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush them with beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar.
  5. Bake:
Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed up. Remove from the oven and let them cool completely.
  6. Make the Filling:
In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. If using mascarpone, gently fold it in for a creamier texture.
  7. Fill the Cannoncini:
Once the pastries are cool, fill a piping bag with the whipped cream mixture and pipe it into each cannoncini.
  8. Serve:
Dust with additional powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy your delicious homemade cannoncini!
